Patch Tuesday April

Other than the animated cursor patch that was released last week, Microsoft is planning for five more security updates for the upcoming Patch Tuesday.

Security Updates

  • Four Microsoft Security Bulletins affecting Microsoft Windows. The highest Maximum Severity rating for these is Critical. These updates will be detectable using the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer. These updates will require a restart.
  • One Microsoft Security Bulletin affecting Microsoft Content Management Server. The highest Maximum Severity rating for these is Critical. These updates will be detectable using the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer. These updates may require a restart.

Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool

  • Microsoft will release an updated version of the Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool on Windows Update, Microsoft Update, Windows Server Update Services and the Download Center.

Non-security High Priority updates on MU, WU, WSUS and SUS

  • Microsoft will release 2 NON-SECURITY High-Priority Updates for Windows on Windows Update (WU) and Software Update Services (SUS).
  • Microsoft will release 4 NON-SECURITY High-Priority Updates on Microsoft Update (MU) and Windows Server Update Services (WSUS).

Microsoft releases patch for Animated Cursor patch

Microsoft released a patch (MS07-017) to address a vulnerability caused by the Animated Cursor flaw. However, some users experienced errors after installing the patch, where Windows give a “Illegal System DLL Relocation” error when the computer starts or when the users attempted to run certain third party application. This is due to a conflict of address between User32.dll and Hhctrl.ocx. As such, a new patch is released to remedy this problem. It is available at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/935448.

No Security Updates for coming Patch Tuesday

There won’t be any patches for this coming March’s Patch Tuesday, according to Microsoft. Patches for reported vulnerabilities on Internet Explorer 7, Publisher 2007 and Windows Vista are on the way, but will not be ready in time for March’s Patch Tuesday. However, the following will be made available on March 13, 2007.

  • An updated version of the Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool on Windows Update, Microsoft Update, Windows Server Update Services and the Download Center.

Non-security High Priority updates on MU, WU, WSUS and SUS

  • Two non-security high-priority updates for Windows on Windows Update (WU) and Software Update Services (SUS).
  • Four non-security high-priority updates on Microsoft Update (MU) and Windows Server Update Services (WSUS).

Microsoft had released a patch that resolve an issue which may cause a network adapter to register invalid IP addresses into a DNS server when an adapter’s GUID is changed.

Microsoft February Patch Tuesday

Its the time of the month where Microsoft will release various patches for their products. 13th February, just a day before Valentines Day. Wishes all the System Admins out there all the best and hopefully you won’t sacrifice your date on Valentines Day to get the patches done.

  • One Microsoft Security Bulletin affecting Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Visual Studio. The highest Maximum Severity rating for this is Important. These updates will be detectable using the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer and the Enterprise Scan Tool. These updates will require a restart.
  • One Microsoft Security Bulletin affecting Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office. The highest Maximum Severity rating for this is Important. These updates will be detectable using the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer. These updates may require a restart.
  • One Microsoft Security Bulletin affecting Step-by-Step Interactive Training. The highest Maximum Severity rating for this is Important. These updates will be detectable using the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer and the Enterprise Scan Tool. These updates may require a restart.
  • One Microsoft Security Bulletin affecting Microsoft Data Access Components. The highest Maximum Severity rating for this is Critical. These updates will be detectable using the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer and the Enterprise Scan Tool. These updates may require a restart.
  • One Microsoft Security Bulletin affecting Windows Live OneCare, Microsoft Antigen, Microsoft Windows Defender, Microsoft Forefront Security for Exchange Server and Microsoft Forefront Security for SharePoint. The highest Maximum Severity rating for these is Critical. These products provide built-in mechanisms for automatic detection and deployment of updates. Some of these updates may require a restart.

  • Microsoft will release an updated version of the Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool on Windows Update, Microsoft Update, Windows Server Update Services and the Download Center.
    Note that this tool will NOT be distributed using Software Update Services (SUS).

Patch that Apple Bug Project

As part of an effort to support MOAB, Landon Fuller, a Infrastructure Software Engineer from Three Rings has started a project to patch up the flaws that are noted in MOAB, possibly patching one per day, or as per release. He decided to start this project after coming across MOAB website, as stated in his blog.
