Vista upgrade kills your XP key

By hayami.wai, January 30, 2007 5:49 pm

If you have decided to upgrade your existing Windows XP to Vista, your existing XP key will be invalidated, preventing activation. This move is to prevent users from dual booting or using the XP key on another computer. This is reasonable, as you are upgrading, removing the need for the older key.

But here comes the question. What it you decided to downgrade back to Windows XP? Having activated the Vista Upgrade, the old Windows XP key would be rendered useless already… *shrugs

Buying Vista OEM software is a OK

By hayami.wai, January 30, 2007 2:19 pm

As according to Microsoft. However, that would mean that support for the operating system will fall back to the end-users themselves, being the system builder.

Countdown to Windows Vista

By hayami.wai, January 24, 2007 4:26 pm

With less than a week to the official launch of Windows Vista (although it was already available to enterprise customers as early as December 2007), some of you might be wondering if you should get down to the nearest retail outlet to grab a copy of Vista once it is available or to wait for a later time. This article can and might provide you with more information about Vista and hope it can help you in your decision making.

Windows Vista is the most significant Windows launch ever, according to Microsoft. This is rather true, with four versions of Vista, as compared to Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, each having only one version, Windows 2000 consisting of three versions and finally Windows XP which comes in two versions. Each version of Vista is designed for the different users. Home basic and home premium for the home users, business edition for corporate users and for those who wishes to enjoy the both of two worlds, there is the Ultimate edition. Four versions of the operating system will be available on the online store by the end of January. The prices for the respective versions will be the same as suggested retail price, with the Home Basic going for US$199, Home Premium at US$239, Business at $299 and the Ultimate selling for US$399.

Consumers with multiple computers can also purchase additional license for Windows Vista at just US$50 each.

Pre-order your copy now at Amazon.com. Kinda stupid to have a signature edition. But the box looks cool though.

Windows Vista Ultimate Extras

By hayami.wai, January 12, 2007 2:53 pm

The Extras, comes in three flavours at the moment. Namely, Windows DreamScene, BitLocker and EFS Enhancements and Hold ‘Em Poker Game.

Windows DreamScene
Windows DreamScene is the alternative for the traditional desktop background. The only difference is, Windows DreamScene uses videos rather that images. That is, we are finally getting an animated background. Windows DreameScene currently only supports .mpeg and .wmv video file formats, which limits us to the videos that can be selected as the desktop background. Hopefully more file formats will be support in the future.

BitLocker and EFS Enhancements
BitLocker and EFS Enhancements are some of the new security features that had been added into Windows Vista, though available to both the Business and Ultimate edition only. BitLocker encrypts all data on the harddisk, be it documents or programs, including windows itself. By doing so, it can prevent data theft from which the thief attempts to boot the harddisk with another OS other that the host OS (by live cd or simply plugging the harddisk to another computer).

For more information on BitLocker and EFS, you can go to http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windowsvista/aa906016.aspx

Hold ‘Em Poker Game
As the name says, its a poker game, that uses Microsoft® DirectX® technology to provide you with the rich and smooth graphics. By the way, you won’t go broke playing this since there is no real money involved. But that also implied that you can’t get rich thru it either.

While you might be getting excited over the extras, at least for the Windows DreamScene, you won’t get to enjoy it until the end of January 2007, and you will need to have Windows Vista Ultimate to enjoy them.
